The Greater Minnesota Worker Center (GMWC) seeks a Bilingual English/Spanish Organizer to organize low-wage workers in the Greater St. Cloud area. While small the GMWC has been on the frontlines organizing workers in poultry meatpacking pants. Workers commonly experience wage theft and safety is always a concern. 

For the right organizer it’s an opportunity to be a part of building an enduring organizing program to advance the interests of working people In a region of the state that is often overlooked. This position will be an additional layer of support for meatpacking workers whose working conditions have deteriorated during the pandemic. The organizer will be primarily tasked with building membership amongst Spanish-speaking workers to strengthen the low-wage worker committee

The Greater Minnesota Worker Center brings together low-wage workers with community leaders to bring about meaningful and enduring change for workers, in the community and on the job. GMWC builds power for low-wage workers through organizing, education, advocacy, and leadership development.

GMWC is a multilingual, multi-ethnic, base-building organization. This organizer will work with the board and organizers on the committee of workers supporting each other’s struggles for justice. This position will also coordinate with the existing organizing happening among Somali workers. 

Duties

  • Recruit, train, and develop worker leaders 
  • Develop workers into members, member organizers, and leadership positions
  • Increase formal membership and general participation especially with Latino workers in the organization
  • Lead trainings on workers’ rights: health and safety, organizing, unemployment, workers comp, etc.
  • Lead trainings on immigration oriented topics: DACA, TPS, naturalization, etc
  • Increase formal membership and general participation especially with Latino workers in the organization
  • Lead trainings on workers’ rights: health and safety, organizing, unemployment, workers comp, etc.
  • Identify and craft strategic industry campaigns, pursuing potential communities of interest in meatpacking, agriculture, construction, and other low-wage sectors
  • Support local, state, and federal issue campaigns for immigration reform
  • Build strategic relationships with community allies (politicians, non-profits, faith, academic, labor)
  • Support fundraising and reporting with funders
  • Use Google forms and database to track worker contacts and activities
  • Any other duties as may be assigned

Qualifications

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Highly self-motivated, ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
  • Ability, willingness to interpret in multi-lingual settings
  • 1-2 years of worker (preferred) or similar direct action organization
  • Ability, willingness to interpret in multi-lingual settings
  • Strong, demonstrated campaign planning and strategic planning skills
  • Strong commitment to social and economic justice
  • Experience working with diverse communities and as a part of a diverse team
  • Proven ability to generate written reports quickly and efficiently 
  • Strong attention to detail and highly receptive to interpersonal dynamics
  • Proficiency in English and Spanish
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license, automobile (to be used for work purposes) and auto insurance

Desired Skills

  • Proven ability to fundraise from union organizations, government grants or foundations 
  • Union organizing experience
  • Experience as a lead on worker organizing campaigns

Salary

Commensurate with experience, includes healthcare and retirement.
