Rally to support Dream Act Tuesday at Capitol

Supporters of the Dream Act will rally Tuesday, May 16, in a final effort to see the education measure passed before the end of the legislative session. The rally will be at 4 p.m. in the state Capitol rotunda.

“The legislative session is rumored to end this Wednesday, and the Dream Act is still waiting to be voted on,” the Minnesota Immigrant Freedom Network said in announcing the rally. “Right now, the fate of the Dream Act resides with Governor Pawlenty.”

The Dream Act would allow young people who have lived in Minnesota and attended Minnesota high schools to pay in-state tuition at state universities and colleges, even though they are not citizens. Currently, many of these young people ? who often come to the state as part of immigrant families ? are priced out of higher education, proponents said.
