State contract talks resume

Negotiations resumed Tuesday between the State of Minnesota and two unions representing state employees, AFSCME Council 6 and the Minnesota Association of Professional Employees.

After bargaining went well into the evening on Aug. 1, mediators decided to recess the talks for 10 days. Both sides are still far apart, although the state has dropped its proposal for a pay cut and is now proposing a two-year pay freeze, Council 6 said in a statement on its website, www.afscmecouncil6.org.

The union is very concerned that job cuts, increased work loads and the proposed pay freeze and health care premium increases mean that state workers are bearing the brunt of Minnesota?s budget problems.

?The State still does not understand that it is simply wrong to balance the budget on the backs of health care for workers and their families,? Council 6 said.
