Here is a list of some of Nellie Stone Johnson’s major contributions to labor, government and community.

NAACP – Joined the Minneapolis NAACP in 1934. * Worked to desegregate the US armed forces.

Democratic Farmer Labor Party – National delegate for the state of Minnesota in 1944. * DFL State Executive Board Member * Initial Organizer of the party, along with Hubert H. Humphrey in the 1940s.

Democratic National Committee – Served two terms in the 1980s.

Hotel and Restaurant Union Local 665 – One of the founders of the Hotel and Restaurant Union. * Organized workers at the Minneapolis Athletic Club in 1930s. * Vice President – first female officer of a local. * First woman in nation to serve on a contract negotiations committee where she worked to gain pay equity for maids, maintenance and hotel restaurant workers.

Minnesota Culinary Council – Served as first female vice president.

Minneapolis Library Board – First African-American elected official to hold a city-wide office.

Minnesota Higher Education Board – Board member. * Appointed to oversee the merger of the state colleges, community colleges and technical colleges.

Minneapolis Technical College – Elected Vice Chairperson.
