Here are tributes from friends and colleagues, some given in the past few days and some on the occasion of his retirement last year:

“I think the most important element of Bill’s legacy will be a redefinition of leadership. He didn’t have Ph.Ds hanging on the wall, but he was the wisest man I knew. Because of that wisdom, he commanded the respect of blue collar, pink collar and white collar. He was a respected leader and confidant of university presidents as well as those of us who worked in the trenches. That was an unusual gift. He had an inate wisdom about human beings.”
Louise Sundin, president, Minneapolis Federation of Teachers Local 59

“‘Pete,’ as I call him, is a man with guts, a self-educated guy who has tremendous drive. When he decided to do something, nothing could stop him ’til he got it done. He had charisma — he was a typical iron worker — and has been an important voice in building trades labor.”
John Sheehan, former Minnesota AFL-CIO 4th District V.P. & fellow Iron Worker

“I’d like everyone — in politics or labor or the professions — to be like Bill Peterson in one important way. Bill has always stood by his word; you could just take it to the bank. If everybody operated the way Bill Peterson does, life would be so much better and simpler.”
George Latimer, former St. Paul mayor

“He’s organized and he’s got great people skills. He puts everything into everyday. With Bill, there’s no half measure.”
Mike Galvin, attorney, Briggs and Morgan

“You can always get the facts straight from Bill. He shakes your hand and it’s as good as a signed contract. And his political instincts are excellent, he knows where people are at and respects their point of view…and he’s always capable of providing his own.”
State Senator Steve Novak, DFL-New Brighton
