AFL-CIO applauds Wellstone decision

Minnesota AFL-CIO President Bernard Brommer joined more than a dozen state leaders to applaud U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone’s decision to seek a third term.

Wellstone, who has been endorsed by the labor federation in both of his campaigns for U.S. Senate, said he will run again because of the 50-50 split in the Senate and the issues at stake, such as protection of Social Security, the environment and worker rights.

‘Now is not the time for me to walk away from this fight,’ he told reporters at a news conference.

Others who took the podium with Brommer on Jan. 17 to thank Wellstone for his decision included environmentalist Ginny Yingling, suicide-prevention advocates Al and Mary Ann Klusner, St. Paul Federation of Teachers President Ian Keith and Bruce Rueben, president of the Minnesota Hospital and Health Care Association. St. Paul School Board member Neal Thao and community activist Josie Johnson also spoke.
